We are in Lunigiana, a land rich in history, spanning Liguria and Tuscany. The vineyards appear on the broad alluvial terraces of the plain, and then we see them climb, claiming ground from the woods, towards the high hills, alternating with olive groves along the slopes. An ancient land of agriculture, of vines and olives on the hillsides, of market gardens on the low river plain.
The Santa Caterina estate is a hill formation of about eight hectares, 40 metres above sea level, just outside the town of Sarzana. On this hill of alluvial origin, terraced and sloping, with red clay soil, stand our Vermentino, Albarola and Sangiovese vines. Not far away, towards the sea, on gravelly and pebbly alluvial terraces, lie our other vine-and-olive holdings known as Ghiarétolo (with Merlot, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Granaccia) and Giuncàro (with Tocai Friulano — a limited and original tradition found in the vineyards of Sarzana — and Sauvignon blanc). In total the vineyards cover about seven hectares.
Olive trees are scattered here and there along the edges of the vineyards, of the Frantoio, Leccino, Muraiolo and Pignola varieties.

I came to winemaking out of love for the land my mother had inherited from my grandfather, and for my fondness for the people who worked it…
The nature of wine
It is hard to find a single word that captures the agricultural and artisanal value of making wine in a non-invasive way, respectful of nature and of the fermentative transformation of the grape, within the peculiarities of each vintage and the balance of goodness it can spontaneously achieve.
Making wine according to nature is an aspiration: to create something rich in life, an act and a commitment of trust in the possibility that the grape's transformation happens without manipulations that would reshape the character of the vintage and the true nature of the grapes and the territory. It means accompanying the wine as it forms without tricks, without corrections, without artificially imposing our idea of quality through systematic adjustments — thanks to serious commitment first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. What follows is a genuine acceptance of natural processes, guided by our experience in helping that transformation unfold well, a transformation that will then live on in the wine for a long time.

Working the land
Physical strength is needed in our work, but also sensitivity and tenderness…
